The Great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) is the largest member of the Grebe family found in Europe. Favouring deep waters as its habitat, it can often be found on lakes, reservoirs, ponds and marshes across most of Europe. |

During its breeding season, it displays an ornate plumage of black crested feathers on its head, which can sometimes be seen opening up like fans above a ruff of rusty-orange coloured feathers around its neck. Once its offspring have flown the nest, however, this eye-catching plumage disappears to be replaced by feathers of a uniform tone. During the winter, it lives around coastal areas and estuaries, where it can be observed diving.
Insects, crustaceans and vegetation complement its main diet of fish.
