The Northwest Winds (known as “galernas”) are violent storms that break out suddenly during warm and peaceful days. A cold front is followed by strong winds that shift in direction and intensity. |

When they first appear, the sky darkens, temperatures suddenly drop by about 12ºC, atmospheric pressure also drops, humidity levels reach saturation point and a once calm sea turns into a maelstrom spewing forth waves over ten metres high that mercilessly crash against the coast, as intense rain lashes upon ground and waters alike.
This extremely violent meteorological phenomenon can be witnessed every year in the Cantabrian coast, sadly often at the expense of many seamen’s lives, not to mention vast infrastructural damage. This feature is the culmination of several years of hard work, and is also intended as our tribute to the sea and to those who dedicate their lives to it.
